Have You Tried Auricular Acupuncture?
If you've ever been curious about acupuncture, but felt hesitant about needles across your whole body, auricular acupuncture might be exactly what you're looking for.
It's a branch of traditional Chinese medicine that focuses entirely on the outer ear. The idea is beautifully simple, your ear is seen as a micro-map of your entire body, with specific points corresponding to different organs, systems, and emotional states. By gently stimulating these points with very fine needles, we can encourage your body's natural healing response, regulate the nervous system, and restore balance.
One of the things I love most about it is how accessible it is. There's no undressing, no long sessions lying still, and the needles are tiny, they are the same fine, detox-sized needles used in the NADA (National Acupuncture Detoxification Association) protocol. They're inserted manually with a gentle twist rather than any sharp tapping, which keeps the whole experience calm and comfortable. Most people are surprised at how quick and relaxed it feels.
What Can It Help With?
Auricular acupuncture is increasingly recognised for its role in supporting:
Stress and anxiety reduction
Improved sleep
Emotional balance and mood support
Pain management, including headaches, back pain, and joint discomfort
Hormonal and reproductive health
General relaxation and wellbeing
What Does the Research Say?
While auricular acupuncture has roots stretching back thousands of years, modern research is catching up and the results are encouraging.
A 2023 randomised controlled trial published in JAMA Network Open looked at 74 adults with moderate to severe depression. Participants received twelve 15-minute auricular acupuncture sessions over six weeks. Nearly 60% recovered from depression, a rate comparable to standard pharmacotherapy, and 46% reported complete cessation of symptoms, compared to just 13% in the control group receiving non-specific point stimulation. That's a striking difference, and the researchers noted the favourable safety profile with only mild, transient side effects such as minor soreness at needle sites.
On the pain front, a systematic review published in Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice (2015) concluded that auriculotherapy has sufficient scientific evidence to support its use in managing chronic pain, particularly headaches, migraines, back and neck pain, and osteoarthritis. The researchers linked these effects to the activation of descending pain inhibition pathways in the spinal cord.
Come and See for Yourself
I could talk all day about how gentle and straightforward auricular acupuncture is, but sometimes it's easier just to show you. The short video below takes you through a real treatment from start to finish — you'll see needles placed at the sympathetic, uterus, kidney, and heart points, with a full ear view along the way.
Watch and you'll get a sense of just how quick, calm, and non-invasive the whole process is. No sharp tapping, no undressing, no fuss — just a few minutes of quiet, focused care.
If you'd like to experience auricular acupuncture for yourself or have any questions, feel free to get in touch. I'm always happy to talk through what to expect and whether it might be right for you.
